Mateusz Ciasnocha: Bringing agriculture carbon credits to EU farmers

“2020 Challenge participant Mateusz: Using our family farm’s expertise, I want to put European farmers at the centre of climate change mitigation efforts in a voluntary and financially viable way.”

Sustainability as a core value

Having grown up on a family farm in northern Poland, Mateusz Ciasnocha certainly knows the meaning of hard work, and his impressive resume reflects that. Over the past ten years Mateusz has achieved a great deal, between traveling the world, studying at world-renowned universities, and participating in numerous projects. All while maintaining a prominent position in his family business, Ciasnocha Family Farms. Mateusz describes sustainability as an integral part of his upbringing. He merges his passion for sustainability with his love of agriculture in his work today.

Putting European farmers at the centre of climate change mitigation efforts

What is this work exactly? In recent years, Mateusz has focused more on the role of agriculture in climate change mitigation efforts. This is why, building on his family farm’s expertise in transitioning from conventional to regenerative agriculture, Mateusz together with his brother decided to create a separate business: European Carbon Farmers.

Mateusz’s ambitious impact plan that he brought into the 2020 Challenge focuses on just that: his main objective is mobilising European farmers to aid in the fight against climate change. How? Through the use of agricultural carbon credits. He hopes that monetising the carbon captured in soil will encourage more farmers to transition to regenerative farming methods, benefiting both farmers and the environment. While he is particularly motivated to bring this mechanism to his home country of Poland, he also hopes to cooperate with ‘like-minded organisations’ to provide advice to policy makers.

What attracted Mateusz to the Nudge Global Impact Challenge?

Mateusz joined the Challenge because he was drawn to both its dynamic community of participants, as well as its partnerships with numerous influential companies. He sees a great potential for both his project and his network to grow throughout the course of the Challenge. In the words of Mateusz, he views “Nudge as a spectacular platform for creating life-long relationships and driving real, positive change at scale.”
